The Temporary Assistance for Needy Families Unemployed Parent (TANF-UP) program supports families with two able-bodied parents. It offers temporary cash help and support to find and keep work.
Both parents must participate in the Virginia Initiative for Employment not Welfare (VIEW) program unless one of the parents is excused based on their situation. When a parent starts working, they sign an agreement to stay engaged in work activities. As a reward for work, TANF-UP participants remain eligible for TANF for up to 24 months from the date that the agreement is signed. The agreement permits TANF-UP participants to earn wages up to 150% of the Federal Poverty Level.
In January 2022, the program received a one-time federal funding increase related to COVID-19 ($1.29 million). This amount is removed to show regular payment totals.
