Energy Assistance Fuel and Cooling

How This Program Helps

The Energy Assistance program helps households pay for home energy costs. It supports people with limited income who need help with heating or cooling.

Local social services offices provide help in three main areas:

  • Fuel
  • Cooling
  • Crisis support

Fuel assistance helps pay for home heating fuel or heating bills.
Cooling assistance helps with electricity deposits, cooling equipment, repairs, or the cost to run cooling systems.

This program is fully funded by the federal government.

Data Notes

  • Final funding for FFY 2011 was not determined until April 2011 and awarded in May 2011. As a result, allocations for EAP Fuel and Crisis (fall and winter 2010-2011) were lower than the previous year.
  • The average payment per household amounts for 2021-22 were higher than usual due to the receipt of additional ARPA funds in this timeframe.
