General Relief Caseload and Payments

How This Program Helps

General Relief is a local program that may offer limited financial support. Each community decides if the program is offered and how it is used based on local needs and available funding.

State funding for most parts of this program ended in 2012. Today, only limited support remains, including help for certain children. Because of this change, fewer people receive benefits.

Local agencies choose how to provide support. This allows them to respond to the needs of their communities in a flexible way.

Data Notes

  • Case counts may be duplicated because payments to recipients and vendors also include payments made to vendors on the recipient's behalf.
  • Starting in SFY23, the cases and expenditures reported were adjusted to only include state and local expense categories that fall entirely within the scope of the General Relief program.
