How This Program Helps

Medicaid helps people get health care when they may not be able to afford it. It covers medical services for individuals and families who meet certain income and need requirements.

Different groups can qualify based on their situation. This may include:

• Older adults and people with disabilities
• Children and families
• Pregnant individuals
• People with low income
• Refugees

Each group has its own eligibility rules.

In Virginia, the Department of Medical Assistance Services is the lead state agency and sets Medicaid policy. Local social service offices determine eligibility for most individuals in Medicaid.
