Appeals and Court Orders

This page helps parents and attorneys to understand what to do when court is involved and where to find appeal and legal resources.

Child Support and the Courts

The tabs below explain when a child support case must be handled by a court, what to expect if your case goes to court and how to ask for support if you need it.

Accessibility and Court Support

Some child support matters must be handled by a court rather than DCSE.

If your case is set for court:

  • Follow all court rules and deadlines
  • Attend all scheduled hearings
  • Consider seeking legal advice if you have questions

Be prepared.

If you have a court date, it’s important to be ready.

  • Attend your court date. If you cannot attend, contact the court right away. Only the court can excuse you from appearing.
  • Bring paper copies of your documents because phones are not allowed in the courtroom.

The court wants every parent to be able to take part.

  • If you have a disability, need special assistance or need an interpreter, contact the court before your hearing.
  • Find Virginia Court System general contact information.
