Paying Child Support Electronically

Electronic payments are faster, safer and help ensure payments are applied to the correct case—while reducing delays and mailing issues.

Under Virginia law (§ 20-79.3)companies with 100 or more employees must send child support payments electronically. Employers with fewer employees are encouraged to use electronic payment options.

How Electronic Payments Are Processed

Virginia uses the Automated Clearing House (ACH) banking network to process child support payments.

  • Employers send payment instructions through their bank.
  • The bank sends the payment through the ACH network.
  • Payments are posted to the employee’s child support case.
  • If you already use direct deposit for your employees, you are already using the ACH network.

The sections below provide more details about electronic payment options.

Tips for Smooth Payments

Send it on time
Enter the right information
Payment formats and tools

Send payments every payday or within four days if you use electronic transfer. Virginia law (§ 20-79.3) requires payments to be sent on each regular pay date.

  • Include the employee's Social Security number so payments are matched to the correct case.
  • The case number is not required but is helpful.
  • No need to send separate payments for each case —payments are applied to the employee's account and divided among their cases.
  • Virginia does not require a Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) code, but 51000 may be used if needed.
  • If your payroll company offers electronic payment services, use those tools to send child support payments. Many payroll providers such as ADP, Paychex or Ceridian support electronic payments.
  • If you have more than 20 employees, use standard payment formats such as CCD, CCD+ or CTX to help ensure payments are processed correctly and on time.
