The Virginia Department of Health records all live births in the state. This report shares data on births to unmarried women ages 15–44 and births to teen mothers ages 10–19.
The report also shows the number of births by the mother’s race. These figures are based on five years of combined data, such as 2015–2019. Births to unmarried mothers are shown as a percentage. Teen birth rates are shown per 1,000 female teens in the population. The report also includes the share of children living in single-parent households. This information comes from the U.S. Census Bureau.
Research shows that children born to teen or unwed mothers or raised in single-parent households may face a higher risk of living in poverty. When communities have higher rates of these births, they may benefit from additional family services and public support programs.
