Institutional Review Board (IRB)
The IRB reviews proposed human research studies to ensure they comply with state and federal regulations and protect the rights, welfare and wellbeing of participants.
What is Human Research?
Human research is designed to expand knowledge, answer questions and address specific problems using:
- Personal information
- Focus groups
- Interviews
- Surveys
- Observations
At VDSS, research aims to:
- Test a new approach or program
- Measure the effectiveness of a service
- Identify best practices
- Study outcomes that apply to other clients or regions
- Share findings that may change practice, policy or research
- Present at meetings or publish in journals
What is Not Human Research?
These activities do not require IRB review:
- Accreditation studies
- In-house program evaluations (like staff satisfaction surveys or training feedback)
- Internal reports for one program
- Required state or federal reporting
- Quality improvement projects
- Responses to media inquiries
Who Needs IRB Review?
IRB review may be required for research done or authorized by:
- Virginia Department of Social Services (VDSS)
- Local departments of social services
- VDSS-licensed facilities
- VDSS contractors
