General Relief

The General Relief (GR) Program is an optional program designed to provide assistance for children who are not residing with their relatives. The program is optional for local agencies to operate. Localities operating a General Relief program shall operate the program under procedures established by the State Board of Social Services and under the authority of the Code of Virginia.

Who is eligible to apply?

Children under 18 who live with an adult who is not a relative may be able to get help through the General Relief (GR) Program. They must meet all the rules for the TANF program—except for the rule about living with a relative—and the GR Program must be available in their area.
