If you asked for public assistance—or are already receiving it—and you disagree with a decision made by the local office, you can appeal.
Appeals are handled by the Appeals and Fair Hearings Unit (AFH) of the Virginia Department of Social Services. Hearing Officers are independent reviewers who check whether the local agency followed the rules and made the correct decision.
Note: Appeals are based on the facts known at the time the agency made its decision. If your situation has changed (for example, your hours were reduced or someone moved into your home), contact your case worker directly.
AFH reviews appeals for these public assistance programs:
For Medicaid, appeals must go to the Department of Medical Assistance Services.
