Need Help Now?

If a child is in immediate danger, call 911. If you need to report or discuss concerns about abuse or neglect, call the 24/7 Child Protective Services Hotline at (800) 552-7096.

Together, we can keep children safe and help families grow stronger.

Parents, caregivers and community members all play a role in protecting children. Prevention Services are here to stop child abuse and neglect before it starts—or prevent it from happening again.

Our goal is to:

  • Help children stay safely at home whenever possible
  • Support families early, before challenges turn into crises
  • Strengthen parents and caregivers so they can provide safe, stable and loving homes

Every child deserves a safe and healthy future. Reaching out early can make all the difference.

What Prevention Services Do
Why Prevention Matters
  • Support families early—before challenges become crises
  • Keep children safely with their families whenever possible
  • Connect parents to coaching, skills and resources
  • Tens of thousands of Virginia children are part of abuse/neglect reports each year.
  • Early support lowers risk, preserves sibling groups and builds stability.
  • Hope + practical tools = safer homes and stronger families

Prevention in Action

Across Virginia, communities are working together to keep children safe by:

  • Partnering with Families Forward Virginia to teach safe parenting skills
  • Supporting kinship care so children can remain with relatives when they cannot stay at home
  • Engaging fathers and paternal relatives to play active roles in safety and care.

Last year, more than 52,000 children in Virginia were part of abuse or neglect reports, and across the country, over 4 million children were affected.

Prevention Services are working to change these numbers. By offering families early support, tools and encouragement, we help them grow stronger and keep children safe. Hope means believing change is possible—and building safe, stable homes where children can thrive.
