Lock and Unlock Your EBT Card

The Virginia Department of Social Services offers a card lock and unlock feature to help protect SNAP benefits from fraud, such as skimming or stolen PINs.

This feature gives you more control over when your EBT card can be used.

How It Works

You can lock or unlock your EBT card using the official ConnectEBT app or the online portal.

When your card is locked:

  • Purchases are blocked
  • Deposits, credits and refunds still go through

If your household has more than one EBT card, each card must be locked for the feature to work.

ConnectEBT is the only approved app for Virginia SNAP EBT benefits.

How to Lock Your Card

Step 1
Download or open the ConnectEBT app and sign in.

Step 2
Tap the Lock/Unlock icon on the home screen.

Step 3
Select Lock My Card Everywhere and tap OK to confirm.

Your card is now locked.
Unlock it when you are ready to shop, then lock it again after checkout.

How to Unlock Your Card

1. Sign in to the ConnectEBT app

2. Select Unlock My Card

3. Tap OK to confirm

You will see a message on the screen when your card is locked or unlocked.

You can also unlock your card by calling Virginia EBT Customer Service at 866-281-2448.


If You Think Your Card Was Used Without Permission

This feature is one way to help prevent benefit theft.

If you notice activity you do not recognize:

  • Change your PIN right away
  • Call Virginia EBT Customer Service at 866-281-2448
