Assisted living facilities are not nursing homes. A nursing home is a facility in which the primary function is the provision, on a continuing basis, of nursing services and health-related services for the treatment and inpatient care of two or more non-related individuals. The Division of Licensing Programs (DOLP) ensures that licensed adult care facilities comply with background check requirements as defined in the regulation "Regulation for Background Checks for Assisted Living Facilities and Adult Day Centers" and the Code of Virginia.
Assisted living facilities (ALF) are programs required to undergo comprehensive background checks at initial application for licensure or approval and thereafter, as required.
