Assisted Living Facilities (ALF)

Assisted living facilities are congregate residential settings that provide or coordinate personal and health care services, 24-hour supervision and assistance (scheduled and unscheduled) for the maintenance or care of four or more adults who are:

  • aged or infirm
  • who have disabilities
  • who are cared for in a primarily residential setting.

Non-residential adult facilities are listed under Adult Day Centers.

Assisted living facilities are not nursing homes. A nursing home is a facility in which the primary function is the provision, on a continuing basis, of nursing services and health-related services for the treatment and inpatient care of two or more non-related individuals. Nursing homes are regulated by the Virginia Department of Health (VDH). To find a nursing home, visit the VDH website.

The Introduction to Licensing and Introduction to Assisted Living Facilities (ALF) training videos are designed for those considering applying to operate a new Assisted Living Facility (ALF). They will help you:

  • Learn about the Division of Licensing Programs
  • Learn about requirements to operate an assisted living facility
  • Decide if submitting an application is the right choice for you

We recommend taking the Introduction to Licensing training first, followed by the Introduction to Assisted Living Facilities (ALF).

Once completed and you've decided that you would like to operate an Assisted Living Facility (ALF), visit our Application webpage. We thank you for your interest and look forward to working with you.

The Division of Licensing Programs (DOLP) ensures that licensed adult care facilities comply with background check requirements as defined in the regulation "Regulation for Background Checks for Assisted Living Facilities and Adult Day Centers" and the Code of Virginia.

Assisted living facilities (ALF) are programs required to undergo comprehensive background checks at initial application for licensure or approval and thereafter, as required.
